I did all the
"right things."
And still felt exposed.
I grew up working class. First in my family to go to university. I qualified as an accountant and spent years advising some of the UK's biggest financial institutions.
The career came at a cost. Too much travel, and a life balance that had gone. So I left and started my own business.
The business created a different version of the same problem. A decade of creditors, cash crises and lying awake at three in the morning.
I had done the "right things", and I still could not see how it all added up to security.
At fifty, something shifted. I didn't want to keep running harder. I wanted the life I'd been building toward to actually start.
